A decade ago, the concept of a co-working space was essentially nonexistent. Freelancers were left to fend for themselves in crowded coffeehouses with shoddy wi-fi and stinky bathrooms. And makers, builders and crafters, well, those poor guys and gals had to find spare garages and affordable warehouses often in the worst parts of town.

Nowadays, co-working spaces for all types of creatives are just about everywhere.

"With the freelance revolution and the maker movement going on, there's definitely been this explosive growth," says Brian Hawkins, founder and director of preFAB, a new co-working space and event venue at The Headquarters (789 W. Harbor Drive, Suite 252, Downtown).
